Jenson Button entered Formula One in 2000 when he was only 20 years old. BMW Williams plucked him from the junior ranks of racing. By his second ever Formula One race in Brazil he had made history by becoming the youngest driver ever to finish in the points. By the latter part of the season he was regularly out pacing his more experienced teammate; Ralf Schumacher. Even though he had shown great talent in his debut season he still lost his seat to Juan Pablo Montoya who had a long-term contract with Williams.
In 2001 he found himself a drive at Benetton but the car-lacked speed and reliably so Button could not dazzle like he had done the previous season. By the end of the season he had only two points to his name while his teammate; Giancarlo Fisichella had been on the podium. The media was speculating that Buttons heart was not in it and that he was enjoying he new found fame and fortune a little too much.
In 2002 Benetton had a bit of a make over and became Renault. The Renault was more competitive but lacked reliability. He missed out on a podium finish at the Malaysian Grand Prix because of a last lap lapse, in reliability. Even though he had improved from the pervious year and showed the same talent that he had shown in his debut season. Button lost his seat to Fernando Alonso who had a long-term contract with Renault.
In 2003 Button bounced back with BAR. He had finally found a team principle that had faith in him; David Richards gave Button his full backing but, his new teammate; Jacques Villeneuve did not. Villeneuve used the media to create a war of words between two BAR drivers but Jenson ignored the Canadian. Button when on to score more points than the former World Champion.
With the departure of Jacques Villeneuve from BAR in 2004 meant that Button had assumed the role of team leader. In the second race of the season, Button had his first podium first and ironically, it was at the same track that he had narrowly missed out, on a podium finish a few years previously. At the San Marino Grand Prix he had his first pole position. By the half waypoint of the season it was clear that Ferrari were invincible but BAR were the team that were closest to them. By the end of his impressive season he had finished in the top three ten times, he had his first pole position and he had finish third in the Driver World Championship.
But, his impressive season was marred and had image tarnished by what was known in the media as ‘Buttongate’, which was saga that dominated the summers’ news. Buttongate was when Jenson Button had tried to move back to the team that had giving him his Formula One debut; Williams, for the 2005 season without giving any warning to BAR, who had given him his only taste of success. The FIA Contract Recognition Board acknowledged that BAR had valid contract with Button and that he had to drive for BAR in 2005.
In 2005 Buttons season has not been the best in his career. In the early part of the season the BAR were uncompetitive. At the San Marino Grand Prix, BAR had finally got back their competitiveness but the glory did not last long. They were disqualified form the San Marino Grand Prix and banned for the next two races for using an illegal fuel system. Since then they have still been uncompetitive.
There has been a lot of speculation as to which team is Button going to be driving for next season, he holds a contract with Williams but, they have lost their engine supplier; BMW, for next season. Because of the uncertainty surround Williams next season Button what to stay at BAR, where the team looks certain to improve next season. But, BAR does not have a contract with the Brit. So it looks certain that The FIA Contract Recognition Board will have to decide which team he will be driving for next season, again!
