Juan Pablo Montoya entered Formula One in 2001 with BMW Williams. He soon established himself as one of the most exciting drivers both on and off the track. Since then he has had numerous wheel-to-wheel battles; mostly with Michael Schumacher and off track, he has declaring war on any driver to get in his way.

Montoya first attracted the attention of Frank Williams in 1998; when at the rainy German F3000 race; Montoya overtook four rivals on the grass of the main straight. Frank Williams was immediately impressed and made the  Colombian a test driver. Montoya won the 1998 International F3000 Championship. In 1999 and 2000 Montoya raced in the American CART series and won the title. In 2001 Montoya finally became a Williams racing driver and in September 2001 he won his first F1 victory at Monza in only his 15th Grand Prix.

In 2002 Williams could not quite match up to Ferrari but, Montoya still managed to take seven pole positions, out-performed this teammate; Ralf Schumacher and finished third in the Championship.

Montoya was not happy that Ralf had a lot fatter pay packet than he did. Seeing that Montoya had out-performed Ralf all season, he thought that he should be paid more, of a sum similar to what Ralf was getting. But, Frank Williams was not having any of it and refused to pay him that much money. Montoya Sulked.

In 2003 Montoyas relationship with Williams started to turn very sour. On lap 52 at the French Grand Prix, was where their relationship reached braking point. Montoya screamed down the radio to the Williams pit crew “You’re all Wankers!” The reply from the Williams pit wall was, “No, Juan. You’re the Wanker.” Montoya was convinced that teammate; Ralf Schumacher was being help by his strategy and accused the team of favouritism. The team later told him that his behaviour was unacceptable.

After that argument Ron Dennis swooped in on Montoya and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. In the space of two weeks, Montoya decided that he had enough of BMW Williams and signed for McLaren. In November 2003 the worst kept secret in Formula One came out; McLaren announced that Montoya was going to drive for them in 2005.

But on a more positive note for Montoya in 2003, he won the Monaco and German Grand Prixs and he was in with a shot of the Championship until a silly coming together with Rubens Barrichello meant that he had to do a drive-thru penalty. The penalty came as it just started to rain heavily, because he had to go through the pits as everyone else was pitting for intermediate tyres, he had to do an extra lap on the wrong tyres, he was slipping around on a wet track while his rivals were whizzing past him. This put an end to Montoyas Championship dreams. He blamed the stewards for ending his chance of Championship glory.

Many people doubted whether Montoya was going to drive for Williams in 2004, many thought that Williams would put Montoya on gardening leaving until he joint McLaren. But, they didn’t; Montoya drove the radical FW26. But due to lack of testing the car was slow and uncompetitive, this meant that Montoya only managed to win the Brazilian Grand Prix. That Victory sent a warning flare to second place man, Kimi Raikkonen, who was going to be Montoyas teammate at McLaren in 2005.

In 2005 at his new team; McLaren, he seems to be more controlled both on track and off it. But, his new teammate Kimi Raikkonen has out shone Montoya in qualifying but, Montoya seams to have the upper hand on the Finn in the race.

Montoyas first half of his season was hampered by a fractured shoulder injury that has caused him to miss the Bahrain GP and the San Marino GP. His season was also, not helped by having to be demoted to the back of the grid at Monaco Grand Prix for causing a multi car pile up involving his ex teammate Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve.

But it seems that in the second half of the season will be better for the Colombian. He has already taken his first win for McLaren at the British Grand Prix.
