Nick Heidfeld started his racing career in Karting and progressed into German Formula Ford. In 1994 he won the German Formula Ford Championship by winning eight out of nine races in the season.
In 1995 he finished second in the German International Formula Ford 1800 Championship. In 1996 he continued to compete in the German International Formula Ford 1800 Championship but he could only manage to finished third in the championship. He also, finished sixth at Macau. In 1997 he move into German F3 and became champion in his first attempt.
In 1998 he progress into International F3000, in his debut season he won three races and finished second in the championship, for West Competition who were McLaren’s junior team. He was also, appointed McLarens official test driver. In 1999 he won the International F3000 Championship and was quickly snapped up by Prost.
His debut Formula One season was not a good one at all! The Prost was slow and very unreliable, by the end of the season both Heidfeld and his teammate; Jean Alesi failed to score any points.
In 2001 he moved to Sauber, with his car quicker and more reliable, he was able to excel. At the Brazilian Grand Prix he finished third to take his first podium. He helped Sauber have their best season in Formula One and he finished eighth in the Drivers World Championship with 12 points.
It was a disappointment for Heidfeld, that his teammate; Kimi Raikkonen was going to be the replacement for Mika Hakkinen at McLaren. Heidfeld felt that it should have been him replacing Hakkinen because, of Heidfelds history with McLaren.
In 2002, he decided to show McLaren what they were missing by putting a number of brave performances. But, the Sauber was not developing the car quickly enough so; he could not keep up strong performances.
In 2003 he got a new teammate, fellow countryman; Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Heidfeld managed to out qualify his older teammate 9-7, but Frentzen dominated in the races and gave Sauber their first podium since Brazil 2001 but, it was not enough; Sauber dumped their double German line up for Felipe Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella.
Frentzen retired from Formula One and Heidfeld was leaved with the choice of, become a test driver for one of the big teams or driving for one of the smaller teams. He chose to stay in Formula One as a racing driver and signed for Jordan.
Nick was one of the stars of 2004, although not a lot of people got to see some of his best driving in his career, because of the TV directors desire to show the front-runner.
Heidfeld managed to score three points with Jordan; two at Monaco and one at Canada. But those three points does not illustrate the full picture. Heidfeld gave it all he had, in the uncompetitive Jordan. Frank Williams wanted Heidfeld to move Williams in 2004 to fill in for the injured Ralf Schumacher. But due to legal issuse Heidfeld had to stay at Jordan until his contract ran out at the end of the year.
In late 2004, Frank Williams needed a driver for 2005 because of The FIA Contract Recognition Board, had ruled that Jenson Button must drive BAR in 2005 not Williams.
Williams tested Heidfeld and Williams test driver Antonio Pizzonia, to see which one was the quickest. The driver that was the quickest would become Mark Webbers teammate in 2005. Quick Nick was the fastest and won his Williams drive.
2005 has been an outstanding season for Nick Heidfeld, he has outshone his highly rated teammate; Mark Webber. He has had his first pole position and has had several podium finishes in the first half of the season.
In 2006, BMW are going to take over Sauber and it looks certain that Heidfeld is going to be the number one driver at BMW Racing.
