How Robert Doornbos got into the world of Motorsports is a very bizarre story! Only a few years ago tennis was Roberts everything; he was playing at a semi-professional national level in Holland. Then Robert and his family were invited to the 1998 Belgium Formula One Grand Prix as a guest of Williams F1. During the weekend he became so enthusiastic about Motorsports and F1 in particular he completely forgot about his tennis dreams. On the Sunday morning of the race, Robert had a chat with Jacques Villeneuve about how to, get into Formula One. After race when Robert was back home, he dumped his tennis racket in the bin!
Wasting no time Robert entered into the 1999 Opel Lotus UK winter series with Team JR Racing, he finished as runner up in the competition with four pole positions, four wins and four fastest laps.
In 2000 he competed in the Formula Ford Zetec Benelux and also the Belgium Championship, finishing runner up in the Belgium Championship with six podiums, one pole position and three fastest laps.
In 2001 Doornbos raced in the Scholarship class in the British Formula Three Championship. He finished fifth in the championship with, two wins, two pole positions, nine podiums finishes; one of them, was a impressive second place in the Formula 3 support race for the British Formula One Grand Prix.
In 2002 he participated in the German Formula 3 Championship with Team Ghinzani. He took four podiums and finished sixth at the prestigious Macau Grand Prix.
In 2003 he remain with Team Ghinzani but competed in the European Formula 3 Championship, he made seven trips up to the podium that year and took pole position at Spa-Francorchamps.
In 2004, with support from Red Bull, Doornbos moved to F3000 with Arden where he was teammate to Tonio Liuzzi. Doornbos finished third in the Championship and was rookie of the year for winning at Spa-Francorchamps.
Days before the inaugural Chinese Grand Prix, Doornbos was named as Jordans official third driver, he replaced Timo Glock who had been promoted to race driver.
In 2005 he retained his position as Jordans third driver. But when Patrick Friesacher cheque bounced at Minardi, Paul Stoddart signed Robert Doornbos as their new race driver; he made his F1 debut at the German Grand Prix and will continue to drive for Minardi until the end of the season.
