Like the majority of racing drivers, Vitantonio Liuzzi started his racing career in Karting. In 1993 he won his first title, he won the Italian Karting Championship. Tonio as he better know as, continued in Karting until 2001, he won various Karting Championships and he also, won the Ayrton Senna Memorial Trophy at Suzuka.

Late in 1999, Liuzzi made his single seater debut by taking part in a Formula Palmer Audi test drive, he set the fastest time.

In 2000 he continued in Karting, he finished second in the Karting World Cup at Montegi. He also tested a Formula 3 car for Dutch Team Van Amersfoot.

In 2001, Liuzzi competed in and he won the FIA-CIK Karting Championship; a series held over five events. In the last round of the FIA-CIK Karting Championship Formula One World Champion; Michael Schumacher compete in the race and Liuzzi beat the F1 Champion on his home kart track at Kerpan, Germany. Liuzzi also, raced in German Formula Renault Championship and finished second overall.

In 2002, Liuzzi competed in German Formula 3 Championship and finished 9th overall but, he did take three pole positions and won the San Marino International Formula 3 race. In only his second year, driving single seaters he was given test-drives by Coloni F3000 and Williams F1.

In 2003 he competed in the International F3000 Championship with Coloni Motorsports. He finished second in Germany, took pole position in Hungary and had a string of top five finishes, he finished fourth in the championship and was the best rookie.

In 2004 he continued to compete in F3000 but, he switched to Arden International. He was the star of 2004 in the F3000 Championship, he won seven out of ten races and took nine pole positions and became the F3000 International Champion.

In latter part of 2004 Liuzzi tested for Sauber and then for Red Bull Racing who signed him, to drive in 2005 along with David Coulthard and Christian Klien.

With David Coulthard driving one of the Red Bull Racing Cars; it was a toss up between Christian Klein and Vitantonio Liuzzi for who was going to drive the other car.

Red Bull decided to have allow, both driver to race in a bizarre driver rota, where Klien would race in the opening two Grand Prix of the season and then swap with Liuzzi and let him to race in two Grand Prix and swap again and again and…

But it hasn’t worked out that way. Klien was allowed to drive in the Bahrain Grand Prix when it was meant to be Tonio. Liuzzi was allowed to drive in the next four Grand Prixs before swapping with Klien, but Red Bull has decided to keep Klien in the car until the Italian Grand Prix and from there Liuzzi might be allowed to drive in the last four Grand Prix of the season.

In 2006, Red Bull Racing should be more competitive. They have confirmed that Ferrari will power them next year. But the situation of who will drive the second car will remain.
